Website design myths are plentiful as are SEO myths. One good old myth is that updating a site frequently will make you rank higher in the serps and never updating means you will never get a number 1 in the search engines no matter how well optimized your page is.
I’ll tackle the latter half of that one first. I can tell you unequivocally that you can have the number 1 position in the search engines even if you never update your site. I have quite a few adult sites that seldom get updated and I have a ton of top ten listings for very highly competitive keywords in my chosen niches.
When I do happen to change a page on a site it’s usually to add a term or reoptimize the page with something new that I learned. It’s not something I intentionally do to get the search engines to come.
BTW, even sites that never get updated make money. Adult is kind of nice that way as there’s always a new crop of customers turning 18 everyday.
Do sites that are updated frequently rank higher than non updated sites? Nah. At least not because they get updated frequently. What happens is sites that update frequently generally get quite large and a large site has some advantages over a smaller one.
Updating everyday also has the advantage that the SE spiders visit the site much more often. This one gets visited more than three times per day. That makes it a good place to place links to new sites or pages and get them spidered very quickly. That’s a nice advantage to have.
Being spidered multiple times per day, by the search engines, ensures your pages will be updated quickly and you can check how you are doing for a term and make changes very quickly.
It also means that this porn site is a good place to put links into posts and comments. Blog links last forever or at least as long as the blog does. It’s always nice to have a place to get links from.
